Full Bio / WikiEverton Reid (b. 23 June 1996) is a roots-reggae lead vocalist from Kingston — the city that invented the form he plays, where the sound system, the studio and the church have always been within earshot of one another. He came up on the roots records his elders kept, and on the conviction underneath them: that this music was never entertainment first. It was a message with a bassline.
The bass is where he starts. Long before he could sing he could feel it, and the low melodic line that carries roots reggae is still the thing he builds a song out of. He sings on top of the bass rather than in front of it, which is the whole ethic of the music in one habit. A warm tenor with a slight roughness — relaxed, unhurried, behind the beat, in a natural light Jamaican tone that is never exaggerated or performed.
Steady, principled, unhurried. He never shouts a crowd into agreement; he waits for them. Real conviction and no aggression whatsoever, which is a harder combination than it sounds — and when the chorus comes he steps back and lets the room answer him.
