CHARITY (Charity Adeyemi-Rowe, b. 3 July 2003, Flatbush, Brooklyn) grew up in a household with two entirely different sets of records and no argument about which was better. Her name is a real one and she's spent her whole life being asked about it. She stopped explaining it at about nineteen and now lets people work it out. She found her way in through dance music, immediately and without a detour — she never had a bedroom-guitar phase and never wanted one. She came up singing on club records around New York while still at school, which means she learned to write for a drop before she learned to write for a verse, and it shows in the best way: she thinks in payoffs.

Bright, forward and unafraid of size. Where CLEO holds a line steady and lets the track rise around her, CHARITY goes up with it — a genuine top-end voice with real power that she uses, which is precisely why she's on the club version rather than the original. Clean tone, no rasp, and a very sure instinct for where a hook needs air and where it needs everything at once. Her influences run the New York club vocal tradition she grew up inside; the big European festival toplines she's slightly embarrassed to love; and a church voice she can still switch on and mostly chooses not to.

The most openly ambitious person on this release and entirely unapologetic about it, which is refreshing in a scene that mostly pretends otherwise. Warm with people, blunt about the work. On stage she's a genuine focal point — the only performer in this release who actually wants the middle of the room. She learned to write for a drop before she learned to write for a verse, and says it ruined her for ballads permanently. She can do the full church voice and saves it; nobody on the record has heard the whole of it. Bright, direct, ambitious.
