His aria, "L'ho amata da lontano," is the last thing he does before he leaves and does not return — the most beautiful music in the opera, and the saddest, a man admitting he loved her from too far away. The work refuses to write Marco as a villain: he is faithful, loving and absent, and the opera's quiet horror is that he means every word he sings. The score assigns him a solo oboe, its instrument for longing.
