Lumen (Lauren Donnelly, b. 6 June 1998, Boston) grew up Irish-Catholic in long grey New England winters — the quiet one, with the habit of keeping her feelings tucked in. Then she moved west, and San Francisco's warehouse parties and queer-friendly dancefloors gave her something she'd never had: a room full of strangers moving as one, a communal warmth that pulled her back into her own body. That contrast — Boston reserve giving way to the ecstatic SF dancefloor — is the engine of her music.

She found music through the dancefloor as something close to salvation — discovering that house and disco could dissolve the self into a crowd and turn private loneliness into collective joy. Drawing on San Francisco's deep-house and disco lineage, she makes warm, euphoric disco-house dance-pop that chases exactly that feeling. "Lumen" is a unit of light; she chose it because her whole thing is the glow of a room full of people.

On stage she's a generous, joyful, communal performer — never above the crowd, always in it: hands up, the whole room as one. But there's a tenderness under the euphoria; she's open about the harder days, so the joy reads as hard-won rather than naïve. Her influences run from Daft Punk's Random Access Memories and Nile Rodgers' Chic through French house to Madonna's structural vision, Robyn's emotional complexity and Pharrell's collective joy. She names her demos after the colour the lights happened to be when she wrote them. Warm, euphoric, tender.
