Full Bio / WikiOnyx is a Detroit kid raised in the city that invented techno — where Motown soul and the machine-music of the Belleville Three are both in the water. He grew up between the warmth of old R&B records and the cold pulse of the underground: house parties, warehouse sounds, the hum of the Motor City. A quiet, watchful kid who found his confidence after dark, he learned early that the most intimate thing and the hardest-hitting thing could be the same record.
He started on cheap production software, chasing the feeling of a dark room at 2am — the bass you feel in your chest, the whisper in your ear. He made tracks that were sensual and minimal, all negative space and tension, and learned that less was more: a muted kick, a sub-bass, two voices close to the mic. He built songs you could play in a bedroom or a warehouse and have them mean two different things. His sound sits in Detroit's twin inheritance — techno and soul — crossed with the dark, sensual end of alt-R&B and minimal electronic music.
On stage he's cool, magnetic and a little mysterious — understated and in control, letting the music's heat do the work. Live, it's dark and minimal: low light, deep bass, his voice close on the mic, the tension held until it breaks. Sensual but never crude — the restraint is the seduction. Smooth, magnetic, controlled.
