Full Bio / WikiYates Mercer (b. 21 August 2000) grew up in New York — the newest, fastest, most engineered city there is — and fell in love with the oldest, slowest, most human music he could find. That contradiction is the whole of him: twenty-five years old, playing a form that predates recorded sound, living inside the most mediated environment on earth.
He learned slide the hard way — old records, a cheap acoustic, the calloused-hands route — building the one skill that takes a decade and can't be shortcut, in an era that shortcuts everything. He doesn't play country blues as nostalgia. He plays it because it's the only thing he has that can't be generated. Around his voice there is almost nothing: slide guitar, warm analog tone, a slow tempo, and one subtle ambient pad that never announces itself and never quite leaves.
Quiet, unguarded and uncomfortably honest. He doesn't rage and he doesn't plead; he observes, including about himself, which is the hardest part. There's bitterness in him but it never curdles, because he keeps undercutting it with understanding — he knows exactly why he's losing, and he can't even blame anyone. Tired, perceptive, unsparing.
