Held Breath
New Orleans, Louisiana → Memphis, Tennessee · b. 1998 · FARA Records
Full Bio / WikiHeld Breath (Caroline Fisk, b. 19 January 1998) was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, inside a tradition that treats grief and celebration as neighbours rather than opposites — the jazz funeral, where a procession can move from a mourning dirge into a joyful second line within the same walk, the same brass, the same crowd. She sang in church from early childhood, trained in the long, breath-controlled phrasing gospel choirs demand, and absorbed, without ever having to be taught it directly, the idea that restraint held all the way to a breaking point can be more devastating than any amount of volume. She moved to Memphis, Tennessee in her twenties, drawn by the city's deep soul lineage — the gospel quartets, the church-and-studio overlap Memphis has always specialized in — and found there the missing harmonic language for what she'd been trying to say since New Orleans: that holding on and letting go aren't always different choices.
Church choir came first — the discipline of a trained alto voice that can hold a note back for a full verse and only release it once, at exactly the right word. “Still Breathing” is built entirely on that discipline: almost nothing happens for most of the song, and everything happens in the one place she finally lets it. Her influences run the gospel-choir vocal tradition and its neo-soul descendants — the breath control and restraint-into-release lineage that runs from church music through modern intimate R&B — alongside New Orleans' jazz-funeral tradition and Memphis's deep soul and gospel-quartet heritage.
On stage she's still and quiet until the exact moment she isn't — a performer who trusts silence and restraint more than volume, and lets a single cracked note carry more weight than a whole belted chorus. Intimate and unguarded rather than theatrical; the control is the vulnerability. She took her stage name directly from her own lyric — “I hold my breath… just to hold on” — a poetic name rather than her own, chosen deliberately for material this exposed. Restrained, exposed, resilient.
What they are
Held Breath is an AI-realised act from FARA Records — Fully Artificial, Radically Authentic, the AI-native label of SPATIALx. The lyrics, emotional brief, arrangement and production behind every act on the label come from human writers and directors. Suno renders the vocal and musical takes from there, and the results are handed back to be curated, re-prompted, edited and mastered until they say exactly what they were built to say. We don't hide any of it — the seams are part of the art. This isn't AI filler standing in for a band. It's real songwriting, real direction, and a voice that didn't exist before.
