Percy Gaines

Percy Gaines (b. 21 April 1970) is a Delta blues artist working out of Birmingham, Alabama — close enough to the segregation era to have grown up hearing it first-hand, not as history but as family memory: parents, elders and church congregants who had lived through it and never stopped telling it plainly. Music reached him the same way the stories did — through family, through church, through a second-hand guitar and older players who taught him open-D bottleneck slide and the blues' oldest job: tell the truth and let the song carry it.

His voice is aged and road-tired, a baritone-to-tenor with a gravel rasp that sits deliberately behind the beat, cracking into falsetto at the emotional peaks and dropping into wordless field-holler moans between verses. He plays one acoustic guitar and nothing else — no band, no drums, no bass, no piano — tuned open D, working a walking bassline on the low strings and the melody on the high strings at the same time, the slide answering every line he sings like a second voice in the room.

He treats every song as testimony rather than performance. The history is not a mood he sets — it's the actual subject, and he's careful never to let the arrangement get bigger than what the words are saying. His lineage runs through Robert Johnson, Son House, Charley Patton and Skip James — the pre-war country-blues tradition of one man, one guitar, one account, told plain. "One voice, one slide, and the truth handed down" is as close as he comes to an artist statement.

Weathered, unflinching and restrained, he doesn't raise his voice to make a point. He lets the silence between verses do some of the work, and he never resolves a song faster than the truth allows.
