"But my songs sound the same on either side that floor."
MUSIC TRACK STORY
Colored Line Road (On The Road Version) is the sparser, wearier take on the same song from Percy Gaines — the identical lyric and performance language as the Studio Version, heard from further away. One voice, one acoustic guitar in open D, no band, no percussion, tempo held loose against the vocal rather than counted. The capture is dry and open, more field recording than session: thinner, more haunted, the road still audible in the distance of the mic.
Music Track Story
The account doesn't change between versions: segregated rail cars, a front door and a back door paying two different wages, a sign hung crooked that the music answers without raising its voice, a woman left in Jackson, and a depot where the northbound whistle cuts two ways — travel on, or stay and lose everything anyway. "One road say keep on travelin', one say stay and die."
Where the Studio Version sits close and deliberate in a small room, this version pulls back to the distance of the road itself — worn voice, natural cracks and strains left in, no polish. It ends exactly where its companion does, refusing resolution: "Don't know if I'm chasin' freedom… or just runnin' me away." Two recordings, one unfinished account.
