Every light you see is already gone — but the shining hasn't stopped.
MUSIC TRACK STORY
The Permanence of the Stars is VELA's debut single — a love song dressed as cosmology, rendered as cold, submerged, afrofuturist electro.
Music Track Story
The whole song is built on a real astronomical fact: much of the starlight we see left its source so long ago that the star itself may already be gone. VELA turn that into a consolation rather than a horror — “every light you see is already gone, but the shining hasn't stopped, it goes on and on. That's the trick of it, love, that's the art. How the dead keep burning inside our hearts.”
The three voices are used as three distinct colours, and this edition keeps them cold on purpose. Edie's breathy, almost-spoken whisper carries the verses, close-mic and submerged. Nia's gospel-trained belt cuts through on the choruses — full, but held inside the ice rather than let loose warm. Frankie's harmonies shimmer above, cold rather than gospel-stacked. “You are the permanence of the stars, you are the echo of every goodbye that fell apart.”
The bridge strips everything back to a vocoder pad and aquatic texture for the song's actual argument, stated plainly: “we don't need forever, love, we just need the stars.” It's not a song about defeating loss. It's a song about deciding forever was never really the point.
The whole thing stays icy, intelligent, peak-time-but-glacial right through the final chorus, before dropping to the quietest moment on the record — a single dry, unreverbed whisper: “look again, love, look again.” No embellishment. Just the instruction the whole song has been building toward.
