Thirty years on, the same complaint about manufactured authenticity gets aimed at a machine instead of a label.

MUSIC TRACK STORY

Entertain Us Again is the debut single from Playback (Nolan Vance), who grew up working through his cousin's hand-me-down stack of 90s alt-rock CDs and watched the same authenticity-commodification cycle repeat itself on a phone screen instead of MTV.

Music Track Story

The track leans on a hypnotic, clean-toned, slow funk-inflected alt-rock groove — clean guitar, warm bass, a soft near-spoken vocal — that lets dread build slowly instead of erupting into a chorus. It's a deliberate callback to grunge's original anthem about commodified authenticity, just retargeted: the machine has replaced the label as the thing hollowing out the art.

Rather than resolve upward, the song keeps its tension coiled through to a minimal, chilling outro, fading the vocal down to a near-whisper instead of building to a release. The irony sits at the center of the whole record: an AI-realised artist singing about AI hollowing out artists.

A hypnotic, clean-toned, slow funk-inflected alt-rock groove that lets dread build without ever needing to shout, a deliberate callback to grunge's original commodified-authenticity anthem retargeted at AI instead of a label, and a minimal outro that fades the vocal down to a near-whisper rather than resolving upward — the whole record leans into the pointed irony of an AI-realised artist singing about AI hollowing out artists.
